Simple ways to maintain kidney health

Your kidneys are bean-shaped organs located toward the back of your abdomen. They play a vital role in filtering waste products from your blood and maintaining the proper balance of body fluids. Each kidney contains tiny functional units called nephrons, where blood filtration and reabsorption take place.
Here are five simple tips to keep your kidneys in top shape:
1. Stay active. Health Canada recommends that seniors engage in at least 2.5 hours of aerobic activity per week. Additionally, it’s a good idea to incorporate bone- and muscle-strengthening exercises at least twice a week.
2. Keep hydrated. Health experts commonly suggest aiming for eight glasses of water per day. However, your exact needs depend on your diet, physical activity, health status, and environment.
3. Watch your salt intake. Older adults should limit sodium intake to no more than 1,500 milligrams per day, as high sodium levels can contribute to kidney function problems.
4. Manage your blood pressure. High blood pressure is the second leading cause of kidney failure in the United States. Narrowed blood vessels reduce blood flow to the kidneys, causing damage over time. Keeping your blood pressure in check is crucial for kidney health.
5. Use medications wisely. Overuse of over-the-counter pain relievers like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for headaches, chronic pain, or arthritis can harm your kidneys. Talk to your healthcare provider about safe alternatives when possible.
