Calcium levels naturally decline with age due to factors such as decreased appetite, increased urinary calcium loss, and reduced kidney efficiency in retaining calcium. As a result, older adults often need higher calcium intake to maintain optimal bone and overall health.

Calcium is naturally found in a variety of foods. Examples of calcium-rich options include:

·      Milk: One cup contains about 305 mg

·      Yogurt: One container offers roughly 187 mg

·      Collard greens: 100 grams deliver 232 mg

·      Tofu: Half a cup provides about 434 mg

Whenever possible, it is preferable to obtain calcium from food rather than supplements. Consuming adequate dietary calcium has been shown to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, fractures, and even certain metabolic conditions like diabetes in older adults.

For seniors who are lactose intolerant, there are still effective ways to meet calcium needs. Hard cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano or aged cheddar have low lactose content because it converts to lactic acid as the cheese matures. Plant-based alternatives, such as fortified soy or almond milk, are also excellent sources of calcium while being lactose-free.
